Stay With What Excites You

As a photographer there are those times when you get excited by what you see
That was the case in this scene
Their positioning on the dock grabbed me
I knew from past experience that I would get a better vantage point compositionally so I moved
….hoping they would not

Lucky for me they were enjoying the moment
and the extra time I took to move
paid off

Two Docks ~ meant more options
Here I didn't have the option of a second vantage point
But compositionally my subjects did the work for me
This one brings me back to a workshop with Jay Maisel last summer
"you see something in front of you
and you're thinking -don't move-
and the second thought is to myself
-don't screw this up-
of course with JM
the language was a bit more colorful!

 if something excites me
I stay with it
as do most people
sometimes it works out
and sometimes not

My thoughts - it worked out just as it was supposed to

Island Life ~ bring life through the story telling

Embarking on a personal project that will take me out to some of the 365 islands that call Lake Winnipesaukee home.

Camps dotting their shorelines - holding stories of generations and days spent along the waters edge.

My first visit with Ron and Patty Stone took me out to their camp on Cow Island.

Ron has been chartering on Lake Winnipesaukee for over 50 years.  Making his way out to Cow since 1960 as a young boy.  Laughs were shared with wonderful stories from years past; some with a mischievous twinkle in his eye from those early days of his youth.

Get in contact if you would be interested in sharing some of your "island" stories.

I'd be happy to make a visit and sit a spell.

Let the Light Shine Down on Me

One Word ~~ Shine
The song got into my head and stayed there.
So what do I do - I cough up a photo

Started with a test shot to see where the ambient light was to give myself a starting point.

Garage shop lighting overhead, couple of extremely dirty windows and the garage door open allowing some light to filter in.
 Set up three different lights

  ~ using three different channels

~ all with different power settings

Trying to "motivate the practical" as best I could  ~ getting back to what I learned with Gregory Heisler last summer.

A bit of tweaking here and there…
finessing the light to make the image pop.  Keeping it believable through the process.

Threw in a couple of "grease monkeys"  and I would have to say "not too shabby"

My kind of fun "letting the light shine down"….  on Tom and me on this rainy afternoon

The More I Learn…the more I realize how little I knew

The word  SILHOUETTE
I realize these are not truly silhouettes

silhouette n.  an image showing a solid shape;
typically black with the interior being featureless

my "take" on it

I used definitive lighting to show a solid shape;
could not visualize me with an interior that is featureless….I believe in my heart, soul and gut wholeheartedly

so that's what I went by in the making of this series

Trust what's you ~ you'll be happy with the results

Keeping the Highlights in Check

Working with a whole lot of white.

Keeping the highlights in check and the detail in my whites.

Toned down the light and added some color and some fun to make it more "my" style

That's one of the things about photography -
you go where the mood strikes you!

….next time we'll strike "gold"
