Perhaps... a woman's work is never done!

I had bought this apron quite a few years back.  It brought a tinge of nostalgia to mind and a smile to think back to memories of past generations.

Following an innocent comment this afternoon it will now forever bring a chuckle!

Doesn't Feel Like Summer is Over

We put our kayaks in at Bartlett Beach in Laconia and took a paddle down the river
not through the woods....

A little eerie going underneath the bridge

A different perspective of Laconia from the water

Taking in the beauty of the day along the banks of the river

Happened to catch the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walkers on the bridge....
I was looking for you Tami!

House in Haunted Hill

The freelance editorial portion of my workload with the Laconia Daily Sun ends up being some of my favorite outings.  It's the part of my business that is unplanned and often times last minute.  In the case of the House in Haunted Hill.  I got an afternoon call to see if I could cover this for a feature story coming out next week.  The evening was going to be perfect and I wasn't sure what the rest of my weekend held so I opted to head over to Hill that evening.  The Perkins family and friends put on quite a spooktacular showing.

They've been putting this haunted house together for the past 26 years and it shows in their easy going approach as their night begins.
 Hungry??    ...it's what's for dinner
The FOG room was so cool for me.  I walked out of that room with more ideas than I walked in with!
Skeleton man waiting in his cage for visitors to come through.  They have a great system for sounds to let everyone in their individual rooms know that it's time to perform.
Send in the clowns took on a whole new meaning here ~ yikes!
Chatting before hand I knew this room was coming up.  Love the play of shapes and shadows in the checkerboard room.

What Do You Fish For?

Went to O's along the edge of Lake Opechee and sat out in their adirondack chairs to toast 33 years of marriage with Jim.  The past couple of days have been spectacular with fall foliage at its peak and temperatures mild and summer-like.  Just as it was on our wedding day 33 years ago.
We are a simple pair.
It was a lovely evening
with easy conversation and a warm breeze.

I took a walk with a friend this week and we were talking about relationships and friendships.  I was asked what I was looking for..... my response was honesty and sincerity.

If I had to come up with an answer as to what it is I "fish" for?
That would be it.

Give It Your Best Shot

When shooting sports I always try to get the background to gel with the action in the foreground.  It's not as easy as it sounds due to the fact that it involves moving parts ~ people.  And as much as you try you'll never know exactly where the point of action will take place.

So for this game I focused on the black curtain.  It gave me a blank "canvas" so to speak to start with.  The folks watching the game came and went but they had a uniformity about them.  So I stuck with it.  Worked it for quite a while - both teams.  I preferred the "pink" jerseys and got lucky with this one.

I've learned in this business to always, always give it your best shot.  Don't get lack luster in your drive to make a good photo.  Challenge yourself and keep working at it every single day.
Be honest.  Be humble. Be kind. Be considerate.
Good work ethics ~ good life ethics.
Stay in the game and give it your best shot!

Fall

with a splash of summer!

There are often days when you don't get the choice on timing
you just know the work needs to get done.
High noon on a bright, sunny day isn't quite ideal for fall foliage.
You make the best of it by throwing creativity into the mix
and soaking up a warm splash of color!

Looking In to my Artistic Zone

As a photographer

I make photos with all my senses not just my eyes.  I have found that I enjoy looking back on my work and remember how I was feeling during the making of each image.  Images made years ago I can tell you where I was, who I was with and what the main subject of that day was.  These small side moments reflect a lot of who I am as an artist.

These particular photos were made while waiting for a soccer game to start.  I noticed the clouds above and took in their wispiness and beauty - it kind of mirrored the day we were having.   My long lens wasn't going to work to create what I was feeling - so I got out my cell phone and made a few quick snaps.

We all go through "stuff"  ...disappointment you could say.   So maybe these clouds were trying to say to me
it's okay "chew" on it for a while longer.....   ;)

Starting With the Back Layer

During a recent workshop with Sam Abell we learned the importance of starting with the back layer in our images. In sports it becomes a challenge due to so many moving parts.  I always move about during a game trying different angles and playing with the light.  In this case harsh, late fall sunlight made the far right of the field fall into full shadow.  Made for a clean background - something I don't see very often on the playing fields.  When I pressed the shutter for this photo I was wishing the single player wasn't behind the girl in action.....

....but once I got home and reviewed the images on my computer I saw that I was given a gift.  The light illuminating that player in the background also illuminated her stick which in turn highlighted the girls braid perfectly.  Next frame - no illumination - resulting in no separation.

Never disregard that back layer - this goes for all aspects of life really.  The background is as important a component as the foreground and subject.

Chalk it up to more lessons learned.....
