A Pearl Harbor survivor, gives his wife of 66 years a kiss on the cheek at a gathering in his honor for his service to our country during World War II. The joy of my job sometimes is after the photograph is taken and I get the opportunity to talk to the people I photograph and hear more of "their story". For this couple it started with a letter written out of kindness from a young lady to a young man stationed in Hawaii with the US Navy in 1939. To hear them speak of their meeting through those letters and marriage to follow you would think it was yesterday and you could see the sparkle in their eyes. Then to hear Walter speak of that fateful day in December of 1941, tearing up several times but continuing on with his story knowing it is such an important one to tell, you can feel his emotion and sorrow for the countless lives lost that day.
Remember our veterans.... thank our veterans.... listen to their stories.... let them know you care.
Such an honor to have met you both,
Karen
